![]() ![]() We have found it to be a fascinating trend in Urban settings and enjoy the pictures we get from time to time. I have been amazed how many people have what they call house chickens, one or two chickens like the Silkie breed that lay eggs, wear chicken diapers and make a fabulous pet that also gives them breakfast. Bantams are ideal for Urban and Suburban homes. The average person who wants to raise a few chickens for eggs and pets does not have the amount of space a large fowl flock needs. So why is smaller better when it comes to raising chickens, and why should you consider raising bantams. If you’ve ever considered raising chickens, you may have heard about bantam chickens, which are smaller in size than their standard-sized counterparts but just as full of personality and charm.ĭespite their diminutive size, bantam chickens can provide a number of positive benefits for chicken keepers. Let's explore the positive reasons to raise bantam chickens and discuss why smaller can be better. If you're looking for a low-maintenance option for raising chickens, then bantams are the way to go.įrom their tiny size to their hardy nature, bantams are a great option for those who want to get the most out of their chicken-keeping experience. They lay smaller eggs and that is true but smaller is not always a bad thing. A true bantam means the breed has no large fowl or standard size poultry version. There are bantams which are breeds that have been selectively bred over time to be a mini version of the large fowl breed and then true bantams. The word Bantam means mini chicken or as one story says, original true bantams were found in Indonesia and sailors adapted to taking Bantams with them on the seas. Let us introduce you to Bantam poultry, one of our passions. We vaccinate all our birds for Mareks, both hatched here and any birds that are brought in from other NPIP farms. We want family friendly birds that lay well and have fun personalities. Our breeding philosophy is short and sweet: friendliness, health and laying. Our breeds are meant for families, an aggressive bird is not a family friendly bird. We breed first for temperament, any signs of aggression are bred out of our lines. NPIP Statuses can be verified by state at: We are NPIP # 55-1812 in NC. We are NPIP ( National Poultry Improvement Plan) tested for Pullorum Typhoid and Avian Influenza clean. We are members of various breed clubs in the US. All our lines are a constant work in progress. We breed our birds to the Standard of Perfection (AKA SOP) that is set by the American Bantam Association (ABA) and American Poultry Association (APA). We get excited when we hatch out new babies on a small scale to share with others and for ourselves. We are not a large scale hatchery, every bird here is loved. ![]() Red Roof Hens Family Homestead is a small family operated homestead located In Durham NC, raising rare and fancy breed poultry with a focus on Bantam breeds and Large Fowl Ameracaunas.
